Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory

In 2001, the Panasonic Hollywood Lab was established within the Universal Studio Lot in Hollywood. It started off as Panasonic’s R&D satellite office, and from 2006 started the Blu-Ray formatting and authoring services, which brought us the honor of winning an Emmy award for Engineering in 2008. It was around 2006 when studios in Hollywood started picking up our Plasmas for consumer-reference and client monitors, so our display relationship started in parallel with the formatting and servicing activities.

Creating high quality pictures in collaboration with pro-colourists.

Since 2017 Panasonic has been working closely with Hollywood giant Deluxe, to ensure that the technical accuracy of their award-winning OLED TVs matches the filmmakers’ creative intent. Top colourists, image scientists and engineers at Deluxe’s Company 3, EFILM, and Encore post-production companies worked with Panasonic to tune and test the 4K Pro EZ1000 and EZ950 OLED TVs, and will be involved in tuning 2018 OLED models, too. Deluxe is a global partner to content creators and distributers enabling creative visions to come to life.

The expressible bright and dark parts are expanded to achieve more natural images

Many TV standards are stuck at an outdated 100-300 nits – reflecting the days of CRT TVs. In producing images for these standards, a lot of details were lost in dark and colour areas. HDR delivers real-life details by increasing the brightness level.

The images in dark scenes are difficult to see in bright room conditions. But a sensor built into the TV detects the room brightness and automatically adjusts the HDR picture quality to match it.

The signal is analysed for each image, and colours are compensated to match the scene

Adaptive Colour Enhancer

For SDR Content, the images are analyzed and the saturation of each colour (red, blue, green, yellow, magenta, cyan) is enhanced to avoid oversaturation. In addition, brightness is also adjusted to prevent colour collapse and increase vividness.
